20/20 SOV AWARDS LAYLA COVES
2022 CYNTHIA D. BROWN SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Ms. Layla Coves, high school recipient of the 2022 Cynthia D. Brown Scholarship awarded by the 20/20 Sisters of Vision Giving Circle. Ms. Coves is a 2022 graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Durham, NC. She will attend The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall, where she will major in biology.  Her ultimate goal is to become a doctor. References described Ms. Coves as “a student who always maintains academic excellence and is very focused on her goal of majoring in biology with a minor in Spanish. Her dedication and drive are excellent strengths that will carry her through any endeavor she encounters”.

In addition to being an honors and AP student, she was very involved with extracurricular activities at her school and community service projects. She participated in a drive to collect COVID-19 supplies during the pandemic, served as president and founder of The Medical Madness Club, the Bullet Journal Club, and co-president of the Model UN Club. She also worked as a volunteer to support fellow students through tutoring and assisting with clerical tasks for her teachers. Her list of accomplishments includes acceptances of medical internships at both UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital and Duke University, finalist for the Governor’s School of North Carolina, National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society, and several other academic awards.

According to Ms. Coves, “As I’m reaching the end of my high school career, I’ve acknowledged the fact that the one thing in this world that cannot be taken away from me is my education. As a young Black woman, I have been neglected, mistreated, and used as a scapegoat throughout my community. However, I have been able to persevere toward my personal and career goals due to my focus on my education. I want every minority person to feel the power that his or her education holds”. Members of 20/20 Sisters of Vision are elated to support this young woman in her education and wish her the best in all that she puts her head, hands, and heart to.
